The FDA has approved a test that reduces the time needed to test patients for the West Nile virus.
It can take up to two weeks to get results back from the test doctors are now using. With the new test, results are available the same day.
There is a long process that Baystate Medical Center will go through before it is determined if the tests will be used here in Springfield.
"We will take a look at these tests and see what the complexity is, what the requirements are, what the regulatory aspects are of doing them. Anything that makes sense for us to do in terms of patient population we will do in house," said Baystate Medical Center, Department of Pathology, Chairman Richard C. Friedberg.
